Pear Pie

It's pear picking time! We got hundreds of pears off our Barlett Pear tree this past weekend and were very excited to pull out one of our favorite pear recipes...pear pie! I'll be sharing a lot of our favorite pear recipes in the weeks to come (I could seriously write a cookbook on pear recipes alone!), but here is one we get tons of compliments on every time we make it and LOVE to eat!

INGREDIENTS:
* 1/2 cup white sugar
* 2 Tbsp flour
* 1/4 tsp ground ginger
* 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
* 7 pears- pealed, cored, and sliced
* 2 (9 in) unbaked pie crusts
* 1 1/2 Tbsp lemon juice
* 1/4 tsp white sugar

DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a large bowl, combine first amount of sugar, flour, ginger, and cinnamon. Add pears and toss.
3. Place mixture in uncooked bottom shell, sprinkle with lemon juice and top with unbaked pastry. Cut slits in top and sprinkle with 2nd amount of sugar.
4. Bake on bottom shelf of oven at 350 for 60 minutes, or until pears are cooked and crust is browned. Let cool and serve.

Buon Appetito!!!

This looks really good! We have lots of pear trees on our property, but I haven't figured out if they're safe to eat or not. Do you guys spray your tree to keep the bugs/disease away?

No we haven't needed to spray or anything. The tree is very healthy. I'm not sure if different areas in the country are prone to that so it is needed more...I heard something about pear trees not being able to be grown at all in the south because of a bug in the area that destroys the trees. Could you go to a local garden shop/farmers market and ask?
